Our vision is to be a dynamic program where graduates contribute significantly to the rich literary tapestry of Mindanao. We envision our students as torchbearers, weaving creativity and critical insights into the fabric of nation-building.
Our mission is to empower students through active and interactive learning, fostering critical and creative knowledge. Our dedicated faculty, practitioners in literary studies and creative writing, model and impart essential skills. Graduates emerge as ethical creators, engaging with national and global discourses through their literary works.

The BA English program (with concentration on Creative Writing) of UP Diliman was adopted in UP in Mindanao in 1996 (1097th BOR Meeting, 30 May 1996; copy of Minutes, with attachments, at OUR), and was revised in 2006 and 2018.
Since its inception in 1996, the University of the Philippines (UP) Mindanao's BA English (Creative Writing) program has produced writers who have contributed significantly to the development of the country’s literary field. Apart from the regional and national writing workshops, fellowships, conferences, and awards, several of the alumni have received, the program has trained and empowered young writers to produce literary works that specifically describe experiences and concerns reflective of their respective locales.
A. The students of the four year program will learn and be expected to:
- PLO1. Produce works in the craft of creative writing and literary traditions in English and in translation
- PLO2. Compose creative and literary works from knowledge of various fields and disciplines
- PLO3. Produce works with advanced proficiency using English language as a tool of literary production by exploring complex themes and various forms and genres
- PLO4. Develop philosophical, aesthetic, critical, and technical knowledge of the practice of creative writing and the study of literature in personal, professional, and artistic growth
- PLO5. Lead in the promotion and cultivation of the Philippine Literary imagination
- PLO6. Contribute to the discourse on nation building through the study and creation of literary works that explore the Filipino experience
- PLO7. Create literary works that are sensitive to gender, ethnicity, and class issues
- PLO8. Produce literary works that contribute to the development of the Philippine literary tradition
- PLO9. Develop research initiatives on the literary traditions of Mindanao and its discourse on the context of the nation literature putting ethical practices into consideration
